MISSION: Through the Museum of the Beartooths, the Stillwater Historical Society’s mission is to collect, preserve, and share the rich history, art, and culture of the Stillwater County area.
The Museum of the Beartooths serves residents of Stillwater County as well as the surrounding area. In addition to the area visitors, approximately a third of the museum’s nearly 4,000 visitors are from out of state. Many visitors continue to come from the Crow Reservation, making the fifty plus mile drive to visit the museum for its in-depth exhibit on the history of the second Crow Agency. Nearly 100 individuals utilize the museum archives, spending about 200 hours researching family and places in the county. Schools from Billings, Pryor, Columbus, Absarokee, Park City, Molt, Fishtail, Rapelje, Hardin, Livingston, and Sheridan Wyoming have toured the museum to learn about the area history. The relationship with the schools has expanded by taking artifacts into the classroom for a hands-on experience.
MoB strives to achieve the highest level of professionalism and meet the educational needs of Stillwater County and the surrounding areas within the resources available and with a small, dedicated staff.
The MoB board of directors are continually looking for annual fund raising opportunities for the museum to meet the needs of the community, county, and people. MTGives is a major fundraiser to meet the annual budget.
Through the years, many large family collections have been entrusted to the museum for their preservation and for educating visitors about the unique history of Stillwater County. The MoB is the sole place in the County where one can learn the history of the area.
